Why Do Painted Cabinets Start Chipping?

Noticing chips on your kitchen cabinets is frustrating, especially when the paint job is relatively new. You did everything right, or at least you thought you did. But now there are flakes near the door edges, peeling around the hardware, or whole sections where the finish is lifting away from the surface.
The thing is, chipping rarely happens without a reason. In most cases, it traces back to something specific: a step that was skipped, a product that wasn’t right for the surface, or conditions the paint film wasn’t built to handle. Understanding why painted cabinets start chipping isn’t just useful for diagnosing what went wrong. It also helps you recognize what a properly executed job looks like before you invest in one.

Kitchen cabinets collect contaminants over years of daily use, including:
- Grease and cooking residue
- Soap film and cleaning product buildup
- Fingerprints and oils from skin contact
- Dust and airborne kitchen debris
Most of it is invisible by the time a paint job is being planned. When paint gets applied over any of those contaminants, it doesn’t bond to the cabinet surface. It bonds to the contamination layer. That layer has no real grip on the wood or substrate beneath it, so the paint chips away at that weak point instead of holding firm.
Cleaning alone isn’t enough, though. Even a cabinet that’s been wiped down thoroughly needs mechanical prep before paint goes on. Factory-finished cabinets and previously painted surfaces have hard, smooth finishes that paint struggles to grip. Sanding or deglossing creates the surface texture that gives paint something to hold onto. Without it, the coating sits on top of the surface rather than bonding to it, and chips under the friction of normal daily use.
What makes prep failures particularly common is that they’re invisible at application time. The paint goes on smoothly, looks fine, and passes a visual inspection. The problem only shows up weeks or months later, once the finish starts separating from the surface beneath it. It is one reason why understanding proper prep matters before committing to any cabinet refinishing options.
Primer Was Skipped or Applied Incorrectly
Primer is not optional on cabinets. It serves as the bonding layer between the cabinet surface and the topcoat, and without it, paint adhesion is compromised from the start.
There are two ways primer failure shows up:
- No primer at all – The topcoat is applied directly to the cabinet surface with no bonding layer underneath. The finish may look fine initially but has no real foundation to hold it in place.
- Primer applied incorrectly – This includes applying it too thin to build an adequate bonding layer, or applying it over a surface that wasn’t properly cleaned and prepped first. Primer applied over grease or an unscuffed surface fails for the same reasons paint does.
Cabinet materials also affect which primer is appropriate. Each substrate has specific characteristics that require the right formulation:
- Bare wood absorbs primer differently than MDF or plywood
- Laminate surfaces require a bonding primer designed for slick, non-porous materials
- Factory-finished cabinets often need a shellac-based or adhesion primer to create enough grip for the topcoat
Using the wrong primer for the substrate is a setup for peeling and chipping regardless of how well everything else is executed.
The Wrong Type of Paint Was Used
Not every paint is built for cabinetry. Standard wall paint is formulated for low-contact surfaces. Cabinets are high-contact surfaces that get touched, wiped down, and bumped multiple times a day. Using wall paint on cabinets is one of the most straightforward cabinet paint chipping causes, and it’s more common than most homeowners realize.
The differences between wall paint and cabinet paint come down to a few key characteristics:
- Cure hardness – Cabinet paint cures to a significantly harder finish than wall paint, which means it holds up better under repeated contact and cleaning.
- Adhesion – Paints formulated for cabinetry bond more aggressively to prepared surfaces than general-purpose interior paints.
- Durability under cleaning – Cabinet finishes are designed to be wiped down repeatedly without breaking down.
The latex versus alkyd distinction matters here as well. Latex paint dries quickly and is easy to work with, but it stays relatively soft even after it cures. Alkyd and alkyd-hybrid formulas cure to a harder finish over time, making them better suited for surfaces that take daily contact. Many professional cabinet painters use waterborne alkyd products specifically because they combine the workability of latex with the durability of oil-based coatings.
Finish level is also a factor. The wrong sheen can undermine an otherwise sound paint job:
- Flat and eggshell finishes chip faster under contact and are difficult to clean without damaging the surface
- Satin and semi-gloss finishes cure harder, resist moisture better, and hold up to repeated cleaning without breaking down
High Moisture and Heat Accelerate Paint Failure
Kitchens are one of the most demanding environments for any paint finish. The combination of steam, heat, and humidity puts continuous stress on the paint film in ways that most other rooms simply don’t.
The core issue is expansion and contraction. Cabinet surfaces expand slightly when exposed to heat and humidity, then contract when the temperature drops or the air dries out. Paint that isn’t properly bonded to the surface can’t move with it through those cycles. Over time, that stress concentrates at the edges and corners of cabinet doors and drawer fronts, which is where chipping almost always begins.
The cabinets most vulnerable to moisture and heat damage are typically located:
- Directly above or beside the stove
- Above the dishwasher, where steam vents upward during cycles
- Below and beside the sink, where water exposure and humidity are constant
- Near windows where direct sunlight creates temperature swings
It’s common to see a kitchen where the cabinets across the room look fine while the ones flanking the stove or above the dishwasher are already showing signs of kitchen cabinet paint peeling. Location within the kitchen is a real factor in how quickly a finish degrades.
The connection back to prep and primer is direct. A finish with a strong bond to the substrate can handle environmental stress without separating. A finish that was poorly prepared is already working from a weak base, and moisture and heat simply accelerate the failure that was already built into it.
Mechanical Wear Breaks Down the Finish Over Time
Chipping painted cabinets are not a maintenance problem. They are a diagnostic signal. In almost every case, the finish is revealing a specific failure that happened at the prep stage, the priming stage, the product selection stage, or some combination of all three.
Understanding these causes changes how you evaluate the situation. A cabinet finish that chips within months of application didn’t fail because cabinets are hard to paint. It failed because something in the process wasn’t right. Contaminated surfaces, missing primer, the wrong paint product, and harsh kitchen conditions don’t cause chipping independently. They compound each other, and a job that cuts corners at any one of those stages is already working against itself before the first coat dries.
