Painting Your Kitchen In Five Easy Steps

Can there ever be a truly ‘easy’ way to paint your interiors? The answer depends on how much you enjoy (or resent) the painting process. But in all instances, there are ways and means to make things easier or more difficult for yourself along the way.

When it comes to the kitchen, the idea of sprucing things up with a fresh coat of paint can be daunting to say the least. After all, the kitchen tends to be home to far more ‘complications’ than most other rooms around the home.

Fixtures, furniture, cupboards and so on – all standing in your way of creating an impeccable result. The good news is that with a strategic plan of attack, painting the kitchen at home doesn’t have to be the ultimate headache.

Painting Your Kitchen In Five Easy Steps

Instead, it’s simply a case of proceeding in accordance with the following five (somewhat) simple steps:

1. Clean The Walls

First and foremost, don’t underestimate how much elbow-grease you’ll need to give the walls a good clean. Assuming your kitchen hasn’t been painted in a while, a phenomenal buildup of grease and grime all over the place is largely inevitable. Don’t get carried away and damage the surface of the wall, but at the same time don’t worry too much about making a mess of its current coating.  Given that you’ll shortly be painting over it anyway, a few smudges and smears don’t really matter. After cleaning, ensure the walls are given plenty of time to dry thoroughly.

2. Prepare The Room

Before even bringing a paintbrush into the room, you’ll want to get serious with the protective measures. Use sheets and covers to protect all the furniture and fixtures you can’t remove, reaching for the painter’s tape to create defined lines arounds sockets, services and so on. Ensure everything is covered and that the sheets you use are secured in place – some have a habit of getting rather slippery when wet.

3. Remove Cabinet Doors And Drawers

If you’re planning to paint your kitchen cabinets, it’s far easier to get the job done if you remove as many bits as possible first. Ensure they’re included in the cleaning process mentioned above, after which it’s a case of taking off all doors, drawers, handles and so on. If you come across any damage or imperfections, now is also the perfect time to think about fixing them. Depending on the current surface coating, you may need to strip existing coats of paint and/or use sandpaper to create a slightly rough surface texture.

4. Start From The Top

With everything that isn’t nailed down out of the way, you’re free to get started with the painting process. As is the case with all interior spaces, you’ll want to get started in one of the top corners. If looking to make life easy for yourself long-term, you might want to think about using a specialist kitchen paint to get the job done. These are the kinds of durable and hard-wearing paints that are also much easy to keep clean. If dealing with awkward and difficult gaps, corners and surfaces in general, stick with a quality brush instead of a roller.

5. Paint The Woodwork

Last but not least, finish things off by tackling the woodwork around the kitchen. This could include your baseboards, doors, door frames, windows and so on – the smaller details and wooden trim that accent and complement the room. Speaking of which, it’s worth considering a variety of different colors and finishes for your wooden trim, which could add a gorgeous visual dynamic to the room as a whole.
