The arrival of the winter weather sends much of the country into a state of mass hibernation. Home improvement projects are put on hold, we retreat into our homes, and we wait for the weather to warm up.
But when you think about it, winter can actually be the perfect time to tackle renovations at home. If you’re already spending a ton of time indoors, why not put it to good use?
Of course, the unpredictability of the winter weather can make certain types of home improvements tricky. Something that raises questions where both interior painting and exterior painting are concerned.
Painting your home during the worst of the weather may sound like a ludicrous concept, but isn’t quite as crazy as you might think. At least, not if you go about the job the right way, and choose your plan of attack carefully.
Exterior House Painting in Winter
Is it possible to paint your home’s exterior in winter? Absolutely, but there are obvious variables to take into account.
For obvious reasons, the conditions outside need to be cooperative to get the job done right. If it’s blowing a gale, raining cats and dogs or knee-deep snow, you’ll probably want to hold off a while. Likewise, subzero temperatures and paint are not the best of bedfellows.
Exterior painting in winter means being mindful about what paint needs to cure properly. Dry surfaces, low humidity, sensible temperatures and so on. Not to mention, the absence of howling winds blowing all manner of debris onto your freshly painted surfaces.
As winter is associated with lower humidity than the summer, the conditions can sometimes be spot on. But where air and surface temperatures are too low, standard exterior paint just isn’t going to cut it.
There are special pains available that are designed to work in cold conditions. Albeit, at a considerably higher price than their conventional counterparts.
Interior House Painting in Winter
Indoors, it’s an entirely more controllable story. Given the fact you have total control over temperatures and humidity in your home, you can paint pretty much anything you like.
Spending more time at home during the winter makes interior painting something of a no brainer. Still, there are a couple of important things to take into account, before getting your project underway.
Firstly, it may be trickier during the winter to keep your exterior windows and doors open for ventilation. Something that’s important for health and safety when painting indoors, irrespective of the type of paint you use.
Secondly, the darker days of winter can make it more difficult to see the full effect of the paint colors you choose. Paint hues, tones and shades have a tendency to look very different at different times of day and night. Not to mention, when illuminated by artificial light as opposed to natural light.
Lastly, humidity and condensation can become problematic around windows and doors. Anywhere warm air is likely to come into contact with a cool surface could pose a problem. It’s therefore important to carefully inspect any surfaces you intend to paint, in order to ensure they’re dry enough for the paint to adhere properly.
Why Wait Until Spring?
Whatever you have in mind for your home, now could be the perfect time to consider a pro paint job. Both indoors and out, conditions during the winter are rarely as prohibitive as they seem.
Best of all, organizing a pro paint job for your home during the winter could save you money. Most painters and contractors are far less busy in the winter, paving the way for competitive quotes.
Plus, it’s worth remembering that tackling jobs like these today means one less thing to do come spring. When the warm weather returns, you’ll have more time to dedicate to the more important things in life.
