In order to decide on a color for your basement, you need to think about two important aspects. The amount of the light the space will get, in addition to the size of the space. Often you will hear “light colors make a room seem bigger, and dark colors make a room seem smaller, so don’t paint small rooms dark”. While this may have some truth, we’ve found that trying to make a room something it’s not by painting it will just make the space seem off. So if you have a bright open space, a bright white will look great. But, if you have a small space with little to no natural light, love it for what it is, and make it cozy, sleek, or modern with darker colors!

Lots of light, paired with an open space is the perfect place for white!

Here’s a basement that doesn’t get the same kind of natural light as the pictures above, but it it very open, so white will still work.

Embrace your space! Go modern and sleek with dark colors in smaller spaces with little light, and your color won’t look out of place with the room.

Make a small basement cozy! Warm it up with dark neutrals, and add the bright color you want with accessories like pillows and art.

However, if you do get great light in the basement, don’t think you’re confined to white. Basements with lots of light can experiment with whatever colors they please, and it will look great!
