Update Your Kitchen on the Cheap…With Paint

Contrary to popular belief, updating your kitchen doesn’t have to be an expensive project. It can be as expensive as you want it to be, but it doesn’t have to be. As with most things, it’s simply a case of being savvy with your plan of attack.

All around the home, paint represents the single most affordable (and often most effective) solution for a quick and easy touch-up. Particularly in the kitchen, where the right paint can be applied to almost any surface.

Update Your Kitchen on the Cheap…With Paint

Bright and Bold

One of the best things about sprucing up the kitchen with paint is the freedom you have to experiment with all manner of bright and bold colors. The kinds of colors you probably wouldn’t use anywhere else really are right at home in the modern kitchen.

From blues to greens to yellows to purples, there are limitless options to explore. Not to mention, creative combinations of your favorite colours. Whether you want your kitchen to stand out or blend in seamlessly with the rest of your home, you’ll have complete freedom of choice.

Spruce Up the Walls

Breathing new life into a kitchen can be as easy as focusing your attention on just one single wall. If you feel up to it, you could set yourself the challenge of painting a mural on one of your walls, or perhaps get busy with a spot of sponging, stencilling or whatever you fancy. That said, try to focus on something timeless, rather the kind of passing fad you’ll be regretting this time next year.

One example of which being stripes – an all-time classic that never goes out of fashion. Choose a base color that you like, let it dry and go nuts with a complementary or contrasting color of your choosing. Take your time to ensure the whole thing is even and symmetrical, or go for something totally random if you prefer. Always remember that the beauty of painting is that you can always paint over anything you don’t like!

Cabinets and Drawers

If you don’t want to take things as far as tackling an entire wall, you could simply add a dash of color to your kitchen cabinets and drawers. Paint the entire thing if you want, or simply add a few dashes of color here and there.

The easiest way to spruce up your kitchen cabinets and drawers is to first remove them and subsequently remove all handles, hinges and so on. Give everything a thorough clean (they’ll probably be dirty and greasy) and use sandpaper to create a rough surface. After which, it’s simply a case of applying a coat of primer and getting busy with the paint.

One word of warning – under no circumstances should you skip or rush the priming part. Particularly in the kitchen where temperatures and humidity are all over the place, you need to ensure your paint sticks like glue.

Countertops

Believe it or not, it can actually be surprisingly easy to successfully paint countertops. In order to do so, you’ll need to pick up some paint specially designed for the task, which is available all over the place right now. The application process varies from one product to the next, so it’s a case of following the manufacturer’s guidelines to the letter. Just don’t make the mistake of attempting to use more generic paint on your countertops – you don’t want chips of paint getting into your food!

Dining Furniture

Last up, if your dining furniture isn’t exactly the most exciting addition to your kitchen, why not bring it to life with a fresh coat of paint? Particularly if dealing with wooden furniture, it really couldn’t be easier to get the job done and achieve a professional-quality finish.

Once again, the key to success lies in four simple steps – cleaning, sanding, priming and painting. Go for something quiet and traditional, or add a contemporary pop of color to your modern interiors. Experiment to your heart’s content with samples and get started on a DIY project you may find surprisingly enjoyable!
