Choosing from the endless range of interior painting services available in your area can be a daunting prospect. Dozens (if not hundreds) or contractors, all claiming to be the best in the business and guaranteeing ‘unbeatable’ deals.
All well and good, but how can you be sure that the interior painting company you work with is worthy of your time, your trust and your money?
For one thing, you can divide all available painting contractors right down the middle by way of whether or not they are licensed and insured. Personally, we recommend against working with any painting company that isn’t licensed and doesn’t carry adequate insurance.
Technically speaking, there’s no reason why an unlicensed and uninsured company couldn’t get the job done well enough. But when you think about the risk you’re taking…well, let’s just say it’s an unnecessary risk that really isn’t worth taking.
Here’s why steering clear of contractors who lack licensing and insurance is always advisable:
You Could Avoid Additional Costs
For one thing, responsible painting companies cover themselves against all eventualities for the benefit of their customers.
Think of it this way – what happens if your painting contractor accidentally damages something while in the process of painting your home? Say there’s an unexpected eventuality that results in a broken window or damage to your car – who do you think is liable for the repair costs?
If your painting contractor is insured, their insurance policy will cover the costs of any and all possible damage to your property. If they don’t have insurance, it’ll be entirely down to you to pick up the pieces. Plus, the fact that they aren’t licensed or insured probably means you own insurance providers won’t be willing to contribute to the cause.
Hence, you could save quite a lot of cash by sticking with licensed and insured painting companies exclusively.
A Safer and More Reassuring Experience
In addition, working with licensed and insured painters is also an altogether safer and more reassuring experience. In the unlikely event that a contractor is injured while working on your property and doesn’t carry the relevant insurance, it could end up being you that’s held responsible.
Likewise, working with unlicensed and uninsured contractors also means running the risk of your painters walking away without finishing the job properly. Or at least, not finishing it to a satisfactory level. The problem being that when this happens, there’s not a great deal you can do about it.
The only way to get the service you pay for is to work exclusively with licensed and insured companies.
A Simple Mark of Professionalism
Just as importantly as the above, carrying adequate insurance and being licensed to do what you do is a fundamental hallmark of professionalism. It says a lot about the contractor you’re planning on doing business with, if and to what extent they ensure all eventualities in advance.
Again, it’s not that unlicensed and uninsured painters are all incapable of painting walls adequately. It’s just that given the choice, you may as well stick with those who put their customers first and guarantee the best possible results.
A Word on Warranties…
Going slightly beyond licensing and insurance, it’s also sensible to stick with painting companies that back their services with extensive warranties. The simple fact of the matter being that if you are not 100% satisfied with the result, you should have the option of calling the painters back in to address the issue at no additional cost.
Again, this is as much a marker of professionalism as it is anything else. If they’re completely confident in their capabilities and the quality of the services they provide, there should be no reason why an extensive warranty isn’t offered as standard.
Don’t be afraid to ask directly, if the painting company you’re considering doesn’t make clear its policies on incomplete and unsatisfactory work.
